Her Broken Reflection

by Andrea   Aug 14, 2004

What does she see?
A pale face with black smudges around her eyes
The puffiness on her eyelids from crying so hard

Her cheeks stained from the tears
A sad and yet vacant expression
The mystery in her hides deep within her pain

As she searches inside herself
All she can find is nothingness swallowing her
Until she shrivels up

She has suffered so much
No one sees or even cares
Alone she is left

As she looks down
What left of her is to see?
The scarring on her wrists barely even fade

Her chewed-down nails are cracked and unpainted
When she lifts up her shirt all you see are bruises
From the beatings of her father

She carries a lump of fear in her throat
As each time her mother slaps her for not being better
How much longer can this young girl take?

She stands up as she hears her parents fight again
Her tears swell up in her eyes and anger consumes her
Looking down, her fists tightly clutched

She took one swing with all her might
And stared at the broken mirror
She didn't care about her bloody knuckles

If no one cared about her why should she?
Feeling tears stream down her cheeks
She questions herself

Without saying a word, without knowing what to do
She runs out of her room
Running away from everything

Running from all the pain
It's dark out and now it's raining hard
She's all soaked but doesn't care

She only runs until she's out of breath
Stopping for a moment to think,
She knows there is nowhere to go

Suddenly she hears a distinct noise
Startled she turns around
No one in sight

Still she hears someone calling a name
Her name
Who can that be? She thought.

The surroundings change quickly
She is not in the rain
She is not outside in the night

But in her room
In front of her broken reflection.
Trapped.
