Land of the Free*

by Ami   Aug 17, 2004

No matter how hard you try to convince me
That you are more than ignorance
All I can see and hear
Is your unending arrogance

You say that you can't accept my differences
Then claim that none of you are biased
If you tried to strike a chord with one of your “melting pot” notions
It's safe to say you missed

You flaunt your inflated opinions
As if they make you look so cool
Maybe you just haven't stopped to see
That everyone else sees only a fool

You stole me from my home
And wondered why I lost my sanity
You ripped my culture to shreds in front of me
And expected thanks for your act of "divinity"

With a plastic smile, you strike my back
And you call me honey
But it is all so very obvious
That it was always about the money

You brought me here with empty promises
I guess you thought it was a favour
But the bitter taste of your betrayal
Is something I could never savour

In the early morning hours
I feel the glow of dawn
And I cry a silent tear
Because everything I once loved is gone

On my first American birthday
As you bring out my presents and cake
You tell me that I am lucky to live here
And fail to realize that all my smiles are fake

At first I wore your colours
And vigorously waved your flag in vain
But when the novelty wore thin
Only the damage would remain

I know I'm not who you wanted
But I am all you've got
And I'm a perfect human being
Whether you acknowledge it or not

You wanted an all-American cutie pie
But I prefer to think
And because I'm not a perfect cut-out
You scrunch your nose and claim I stink

But whenever you run people through cookie cutters
You discard so much extra dough
That could have been human fiber
And I wonder how anyone could be so shallow

You say your nation values individual thought
And on that notion you base your every decision
But why is it that you could never make one
Without your brand new television?

Everything comes in excessive plastic packaging
And you believe that happiness can be bought
Maybe that's the reason why
You've never had an original thought

You say that you value my thoughts
But not above my face
And if it had the gall to be foreign,
It had better know its place

Your land is obviously the greatest
Where else can I find love?
Unless you feel the need to hate
Then it is always justified from heaven above

As people are dying around the globe
You see them on the news being slammed against a wall
So you sign a superficial petition and then say
“Lets go to the mall!”

You make a million claims of multiculturalism
Other countries are so cute
Behind your glazed eyes I see that
To you cultural artifacts are nothing more than loot

You hold red, white and blue so sacred
But when another nation has a separate flag
No matter what it means to others,
To you it's just a gag

I come to you from the Northern border
And for that I am a dud
But if I slit both our wrists
I challenge you to find the difference in our blood

But this is supposedly the land of the free
Where nobody has to bleed or cry
I'm living in the land of the free
Some restrictions still apply
