Lady Catherine's Silent Night

Prelude to The Death of Catherine Porter (Series Poetry)

It was about to rain,
And the sky was growing ominously darker
Her footsteps echoed throughout the woods
But she did not hear.
She was too lost in thought
And she paid heed only to things within
Her thoughts were with her love
And the lighthouse where she'd meet him.

- - -

He lay in his bed
Gazing at the ceiling
He'd forgotten all about her
Though he'd called her just today.
He only thought of dreaming
And after he turned out the light
He put his arm around the woman
He'd taken to bed that night.

- - -

She climb up to the lighthouse
Dress partly tearing on the rocks
But finally she made it
And she opend up the door.
The light, still shining brightly
Lit up her golden hair,
And as her eyes adjusted
She started ascending the spiral stairs.

- - -

He was in the darkness
But soon he saw it light
And as he came closer
He could see it rotating.
Then out on the ledge he saw her
The wind blowing her hair aside
And then he saw her falling
And his first thought was suicide.

- - -

Three hours had passed
And he still hadn't showed
But she wanted to see the sunrise
Before making the trip home.
She stood there on the ledge
And gazed out at the bay
And she closed eyes and felt the wind
As if it were carrying her away

- - -

The next morning he heard the news
Catherine Porter never made it home again.
Her body was never found.
No one was witness to her pain.
And so the years passed on
And no one knew of her plight
No one knew the true story
Of Lady Catherine's Silent Night.
