Life of a Preteen

by My Obsεssion   Aug 23, 2004

No longer a child, not yet a teen
You don’t belong in either place
Because you are somewhere in between

Asserting your independence, going out on your own
You feel as if growing up is a race
Wishing and hoping that you are more grown

Things that you weren’t sensitive to before
You will find on your mind constantly
As they begin to annoy you more and more

Such as how your parents always seem to gab
With your friends they embarrass you
By using old people words such as “groovy” and “fab”

You might get pressured into doing things you know are wrong
And foolishly you’ll do them just because you want to fit in
You will find yourself going out of your way just to belong

Hormones kick in, it’s a pretty good wager
That before you know it all too soon
You will find yourself labeled a snotty teenager

Guidance you need though it’s independence you strive for
But believe it or not for the most part
Your parents do know best so their words you shouldn’t ignore

Along the way you will encounter many hardships
Like your piqued interest in those of the opposite gender
And your longing and desire to find relationships

You will experience peer pressure and how influencing it can be
You will tend to not think quite straight
And need to think more about others and less about “me”

You will feel misunderstood, as if no one could possibly relate
You will feel as if nothing is your fault and everyone else has done wrong
So in justifying your need to fight back and retaliate

Yes the life of a preteen isn’t none too breezy
But stick in and stay strong because
You will soon find that the life of a teen is even less easy

That was very true, and inspiring. Except that I use the word groovy all the time :o). But, that was a very well written poem, and it flowed nicely. I liked it. Kudos
