Her Soldier's Son

by Eibutsina   Aug 26, 2004

I don’t want you to go
Don’t leave me please she cries
He says for her to stay strong
Gently brushes the tears from her eyes
To protect you my love and this country
Is why I have been sent away
I’ll call you when I can my love
I promise to write every day
He breathes in her scent
Holds her tight and close
Softly kisses her pink lips
That is what he will miss the most
He boards the ship as he is called
She watches him from the dock
He tears fall so much further
As the hand reaches 9 on the clock
The ship raises its sails
Slowly floating into the distance and away
She stands there praying silently
That she will get to hold him another day…

And as the days go by
She receives his letters by post
Anxiously writing her heartfelt replies
How words can keep two devoted people so close
The more time that passes
The sicker she feels inside
Contemplating each single possibility
What if the war took her love and he died
Weeks have continued to pass
Something in his words catches her eye
He always speaks of seeing me soon or shortly
In this letter he bids me with the words Good Bye
With that growing sickness inside her
She almost intuitively knows
That’s the last letter she’ll receive
Off her husband before into his next life he goes…

She loved him more than life
They were both only still so young
Newlyweds with so many plans
Enjoying newly married life and having fun
Sure enough her intuition was right
Following that his letter did cease
In her heart she knew he was gone
But held onto her hope and belief
She continued to write to him daily
Her heartfelt letters never did stop
Upon the fourth month of his absence
At their front door she heard a knock
Before her baring stars and stripes
Stood a man proudly in his uniform
Speaking of fighting beside her husbands bravery
With each word her heart was torn
He left her with their nations flag
Medals of honour folded in the sides
She watched him walk down their driveway
She closed the door and stepped inside…

For days and weeks her tears poured
A salty river containing her sorrow
Inside her she felt so sick with loss and pain
The sun couldn’t possibly rise again tomorrow
As her pain deeply intensified
Their child inside also grew and grew
One day looking at her self in the mirror
She felt her stomach, in that instant she knew
Her faith and love is restored
She catches a glimpse of hope
With this memory to hold onto
She finds the strength to cope
Nine months down the road
An exhausting 20 hours of birth
Alone in bed she holds there first born
He is more than all those tears were worth
She her husband would be smiling down with pride
He is always and forever her only one
The only other man she’ll ever bring her self to love
Is their child, her soldier’s son
