Seabiscuit

Seabiscuit
By Mark Spencer

I had only one option left to me,
There was no other way to go.
I took the deed to the family ranch,
And bet all I had at Pimlico.

They called it the race of the century,
Two champions of great renown.
Seabiscuit was the money leader,
While War Admiral won the Triple Crown.

Seabiscuit was listed at two to one,
The underdog in this contest.
War Admiral was the odds on favorite,
Everyone said he was the best.

I said a prayer as I laid down my bet,
Knowing I'd lose all if he lost.
Twas a risk I was willing to take,
For the reward surpassed the cost.

Seabiscuit took the early lead,
No one expected that surprise.
He led the race by an open length,
The horse had fire in his eyes!

During the flight up the back stretch,
Woolf took The Biscuit off the rail.
The Admiral moved out to start his drive,
As he gained, I heard the crowd wail.

War Admiral had the advantage,
As they reached the last furlong pole.
But Seabiscuit quickly pulled away,
And a weight lifted from my soul!

He won the race by three open lengths,
And saved my life as he did it.
I stood there in shock at what I'd seen,
It was a day I'll never forget.

It lasted just under two minutes,
But felt like a lifetime had passed.
It was a moment frozen in time,
Filled with an excitement unsurpassed.

The little horse set a track record,
While keeping a giant at bay.
Some folks say all he won was a race,
But he gave me back my life that day.

End.
