What Happened?

by Jackie Bilson   Sep 4, 2004

I grew up thinking life was sweet,
Sugar coated and pink like candy.
But today I listened to the evening news,
Now nothing seems fine and dandy.

A Russian school has been invaded,
Terrorists once again attack.
What happened to my perfect world?
I want my dream land back.

Innocent children being used as pawns,
In an adult, sick little game.,
When did it suddenly become all right,
For people to be mangled and maimed?

I cry silently as the images roll,
Could this really be our Earth?
Where everyone is free to take anyone's life,
And not care what it's truly worth?

If that school had been my own school,
Those limp bodies would've been my friends.
My teachers, my classmates all shot in cold blood,
What a horrible way for life to end.

What's happening to our generation?
We're finding new ways of inflicting pain.
Our ancestors fought for peace in world wars,
Why are we making heroes die in vain?

It's hard enough to get peace at all,
Let alone with guns and bomb involved.
And this terrorist thing is spreading so fast,
Will society ever be resolved?

This was an outstanding work, both for its timely subject and for the excellent use of language and rythmic expression.

I agree with you, it is horrible that we are using innocent children who have no say in their governments or even their lives as pawns in war, it's terrible!! And, nice job on your poem!
