Behind The Mask

by Aken Sol   Sep 6, 2004

Behind that cheerful smile,
That’s always on my face,
Is emptiness that goes on for miles,
Unknown sorrow that makes a heart race.

Behind that meaningless glint in my eyes,
That seems to dance like a flame on a candle,
Is really an act to hide the fact that they cry,
Fire’s been put out, too cold to handle.

Behind that carefree attitude I show,
Always saying, “things will be okay!”
Are deep worries that tarnish my soul.
Sending me swirling down the path of dismay.

But so what if I’m hurting and in pain?
Why should I bother others with my meaningless self?
There is absolutely nothing that I can gain,
From people having pity on my draining health.

So let me make you smile and don’t look so down.
The world is there for me to please!
After all, I am nothing but a clown.
Happiness for all, less me, I shall conceive!
