Behind Closed Doors

by Amy   Sep 8, 2004

Let me tell you a story
About a family just down the road
For so many years
They're secrets remained untold

On outside they were normal
Just like you and me
A regular, happy family
As cheerful as can be

A happy married couple
With three well behaved kids
Bringing joy to the neighborhood
In everything they did

But no one knew the sin
That lay hidden inside
The deceit, lies and evil
That they managed to hide

The wife of the couple
Was pleasant and sweet
Pretty and fragile
Friendly to all she meets

The husband worked hard
Went to work every day
Dedicated to his family
But was often away

The children got good grades
Always did as they were told
Obeyed the rules
And were kind to the old

That was the image
That everyone saw
No one would have guessed
What lay behind closed doors

The oldest was in trouble
At school, got into fights
Doing drugs
And staying out all night

The husband was an alcoholic
On his kids he would beat
Then his wife found out
That he would also cheat

One night he came home
The wife was so upset
She slapped him hard
This would always be her one regret

For he took her by the hair
And dragged her down the hall
As she struggled and fought
Nails digging into the walls

Her screams awoke the kids
Who sat awake in bed
Listening to every word
Their drunken father said

She managed to free herself
And tried to run
But he caught her in no time
And pulled out his gun

Blood splattered across the carpet
And the son walked in
He stared in shock
As anger stirred within

He charged for his dad
Hate in his eyes
But the knife from his pocket
Took him by surprise

His father lunged it deep
Into his sons own heart
As the boys soul faded
This was only the start

Next he walked calmly
Knife still in hand
To where his daughters lay in bed
Hand in hand

There eyes grew wide with fear
As he grabbed one by the hair
Dragged her to the bathroom
The other cried and stared

He filled the tub with water
And tore his knife across her skin
Then took her in his arms
And plunged her deep in

He tied her arms with rope
As he watched the water rise
And turn from clear to red
Tears leaking from her eyes

He walked back to the room
His little girl hid beneath the bed
Trembling in fear
Please don't hurt me daddy was all she said

He took no notice
And pulled her roughly from the spot
Held her down
And placed a pillow on top

He watched her body struggle
Her little hands fly through the air
His eyes remained empty
A cold lifeless stare

It was quiet now
He sighed in relief
He took out his gun
And made his death brief

His body hit the ground
Lay lifeless on the floor
While a neighbor heard the noises
And was knocking at the door

No one ever knew
No one ever saw
What lay behind
Those closed doors

A house of death
A house of sin
A house of evil
Where secrets grew within
