Fear

by Amerimov   Sep 24, 2004

Love I cannot feel
For I am too afraid
Nor can I feel sympathy
Because I am afraid
March the enemy up to my door
And I will turn and run
Because it is fear to whom I owe allegiance
It is fear to whom I run

Bombard me with threats
And I will back down
Assail me with torture
And surely I will cave in
For it is fear that holds dominion over me
It is fear that holds me back

I am restricted in my actions
I am restrained in my thoughts
Because of self-preservation
I am ignoring the call

Fear keeps me from my duty
Fear slows me on the job
Fear has me running round in circles
Fear has me adhering to the law

No, I cannot love you
For fear keeps me away
And I cannot love you
For I am too afraid

(I hate to sound repetitous, but...) This poem speaks so honestly about what so many of us think and feel down in ourselves.. so again, I like the way you pull something so human and throw it into the light. The style here is great.. rhythmical without the sing-song quality.. nice flow and diversity of line structure. This is one of my favorites...
