The Wizard And The Warrior

by Mark Spencer   Sep 26, 2004

Alana was a warrior
And thief extraordinaire.
She had lofty aspirations,
To be a millionaire.

He was Mortimer, the wizard,
The greatest of them all.
But his power had been stolen,
And he was feeling small.

A burglar had breached his chambers,
This thief was quite adept.
That's how his staff and amulet
Were taken while he slept.

For the wizard stored his powers
Within these artifacts,
Lest magic overtake his dreams
And turn them into facts.

Sometimes his dreams would come to life
As a pleasant surprise.
Other times he'd wake up looking
Into a dragon's eyes.

And that's when the Mage decided
His magic must be stored.
Or there might be a consequence
The world could not afford.

But this proved to be his folly,
The means to his defeat.
In the days and weeks that followed,
It led to his retreat.

When news was brought before the king,
The wizard was released.
Discharged for lack of sorcery,
His life of plenty ceased.

But the wizard was determined
To regain what he'd lost.
He would weather any peril,
No matter what the cost.

He learned his staff and amulet
Were safely being stored,
In a dark and fearsome cavern,
Amongst a dragon's hoard.

The wizard met the warrior
And agreed to a deal.
She could keep the dragon's treasure,
If she could only steal,

The wizard's mystic artifacts,
For stealth is what it takes,
To return from the dragon's lair,
Before the demon wakes.

He would then defeat the dragon
With his magic restored.
Any treasure she recovered,
She'd keep as her reward.

And so, this unlikely duo
Came together that day,
Where they shared a quest that led them,
To a dragon to slay.

Alana entered carefully
Into the dragon's lair,
Retrieved the staff and amulet,
Though she was unaware,

That a single coin had fallen,
A sound the dragon heard.
Alana came to Mortimer,
As the fierce serpent stirred.

She gave him back his artifacts,
And his powers returned.
He met the dragon with a spell,
And the mighty beast burned.

They watched the creature fall to Earth,
Alana held her breath.
She heard the dragon's anguished cries,
As it fell to its death.

And once the dragon was dispatched,
They retrieved, with pleasure,
The contents of the monster's lair;
A marvelous treasure.

The wizard and the warrior
Rode off to share a throne,
And with this wealth, the two would build
A kingdom of their own.

Although I love all your work, I must admit I never read any of the "Dark" ones because I didn't know what to expect. But I read this one and what do you know... :-) There is nothing of yours I have read that I didn't like! Great Poem! Really good! I see this as something someone could be reading to their child at bedtime! I love it!
