The Cross

by Mark Spencer   Sep 26, 2004

It hangs upon a chain of gold.
It’s beautiful, yet very old.

A symbol of our gain and loss,
A burden born upon the cross.

And it reminds me every day,
Of how I came to find my way.

For love has saved me from my fate,
Relieved me of this crushing weight.

So I may strive to reach my goal,
And feel God’s light upon soul.

For Jesus Christ is always there,
To carry what I cannot bear.

But those who do not share this path,
Sling arrows born of scorn and wrath.

And I will gladly face their ire,
For He is with me in the fire.

Salvation is the road we share,
The reason for this cross I wear.

For Jesus made me clean again,
And bore the burden of my sin.

His sacrifice has paid my debt,
And so, to see I don’t forget,

This cross will dangle at my chest,
To show me how much I’ve been blessed.

We can’t ignore what Jesus gave
Unto the flock He came to save.

And I see what salvation cost,
Each time I look upon this cross.
