The Sorcerer's Belt

by Timothy   Sep 28, 2004

Travelling at five hundred times the speed of light,
Cruising in my one-seater, as simple to fly as a kite;
A lot was on my mind, doing my monthly patrol,
In the vastness of space, a wandering mind is something you can not control.

Being sentry for the deep outreaches of the Earth is the loneliest job in the universe,
But tens of thousands of us have implemented ourselves into this curse;
The planet-wide government with propaganda so grand,
Coerced the fragile youth with an experienced, seducing hand.

Not only does the government control a majority of the careers,
It also indicates who will be your peers;
From conception we were all genetically created,
Everyone in my city was intentionally integrated.

There has been intervening, even in the matters of love,
The political intrusion was mastered by an immaculate, surgical glove;
At 30 years of age, everyone is bound by the Marriage Law,
An arranged betrothing, dictated by the governmental computer's maw.

Warping through the outer depths of known space,
I felt the familiar depression, and my long face;
For unknown reasons, I set a new course, with the detrimental feelings I felt,
My new destination: The Sorcerer's Belt.

As my one-seater blasted out beyond the navigation computer's knowledge,
I felt I was really on the edge;
The Belt was a nebula that revolved around a newly forming galaxy,
Entering it I was at a peaked anxiety.

Plasma storms and lightning strikes half a light year long were a cacophony of immeasurable intensity,
Veering and bobbing, I did not withdraw, but wondered at my longevity;
Somehow, my mortality no longer mattered,
My ship clattered and my teeth chattered.

Whipping out of the maelstrom, into a calm eye,
There was a stillness there, and an eerie sky;
There followed a tingling in every fiber of my being,
Then there was something out there I couldn't believe I was seeing!

It started as a pinprick of light, through the viewing screen,
Then a silent explosion burst forth, with every visible color seen;
The hues and florescence whirled through my cockpit without harm,
And something was upon me like a nurturing warm.

Thereafter I heard a melody, like wind chimes in the breeze,
It was a peaceful tune, like the rhythm of the rolling seas;
I decided then, be it Heaven or an alien civilization at it's core,
I would return to Earth...no more.
