Those three words

by Emily   Oct 9, 2004

Laying
with my ear pressed against your chest
i can hear your nervous teenage voice
i can look up to your face
and get lost in your eyes
muffled yet stricken with confidence
i can hear you say "i love you"
to me
and i gaze at you
as i watched your lips form those three words
the muscles contracting and shaping
those three words
that are so easy to throw out
those three words
that can make your heart beat so fast that
you swear the person next to you can hear
as i hear you breathe them
amplified in my ear
a reassurance to me.
"i love you too"
maturity and devotion fill up your last word
"...forever"
