The Place He Didn't Know

by lyle fortin   Oct 11, 2004

He never felt so alone
So he walked out on his own
Wasn’t sure what he’d find
Once he left it all behind
He turned the key and started the car
Never really knowing how far
He was willing to go
To find what he wanted to know
But he was sure he would spend all his years
And would give up blood, sweat, and tears
To figure out where he was meant to go
On the path he was meant to know
He couldn’t really count on his friends
As most weren’t true to the end
As they had said they would be
They had said “You can count on me”
He couldn’t count on them like they said he could
They weren’t there like they said they would
They left him lying next to that dirty gutter
And no one was there to hear him mutter:
“What a mess I have found myself in
Lying next to this empty bottle of gin.
I know that this is a bind
That fate did not have in mind.”
This is the day he decided to go
To the place he did not know.
He was ready to place his bet
And start his race with the sunset.
He stopped in a run-down liquor store
And there was no way he could ignore
The sweet way she stood in that line
He was positive her beauty stood beyond time.
“Doll, You don’t have to stand here today
Come with me, we’ll run away.”
His windblown hair
His handsome stare
And that jacket of leather
Worn down by the weather
Forced her under the power of his charm
From that day one she clung to his arm
She was sure she was meant to go
To the place they did not know.
“Baby, I’ll go with you to the end”
“Doll, you are my only friend”
But he could never hide from his past
And the shadow over him it cast.
He knew he could never run
He was sure they would come.
No matter how fast he would drive
He knew they were soon to arrive.
”Doll, reach into glove box, get me my gun”
“Baby, don't do it, We can always run”
She gave him the gun, as the car pulled up behind
He wasn’t scared, He knew his past would find
Where ever he was trying to hide
But he knew he could always confide
In the love he shared with his girl
She was everything to him in this world.
”Doll, I love you always and forever”
He stepped out of the car and she knew she would never
See him again, She jumped as shots rang out
She knew her baby lost this bout
That he had with fate
And all his former hate.
He finally realized he couldn’t run from his past
And the shadow over his life it had cast.
