Mind's Eye (Villanelle)

by Sean Allen   Oct 13, 2004

Can you capture and bottle up "insane,"
The forgotten mother of invention?
Glimpse into the eye of the hurricane.

I've got nothing to lose, nothing to gain,
spending my time in hopeless dissension.
Can you capture and bottle up "insane?"

Stretch the difference between Abel and Cain;
it is a case of violent compulsion.
Glimpse into the eye of the hurricane.

Its haphazard furies are all but tame;
nature's actions seem to lack intention.
Can you capture and bottle up "insane?"

Tickling little winds that first seem plain
may soon grow to majestic proportions.
Glimpse into the eye of the hurricane.

Furious, uncaring, every man's bane,
it strikes without care or predilection.
Can you capture and bottle up "insane?"
Glimpse into the eye of the hurricane.

    I love a poem that suggests so much without being too blatant or too confusing. Great poem, Sean!

    I counted "difference" as three syllables, and so actually the third stanza is fine.
