Truth

by Ashley Marie   Oct 28, 2004

When death has come to my doorstep
and is waiting for my soul.
And you've come to weep beside me
and say your final goodbyes to me
I shall not pay my toll and go.

When terror is high overhead
and children cannot share.
When all are mad or sick in bed
I shall not care.

When elders need a place to rest
and angels cannot find a breath.
When very space is taken up
and even life itself is stuffed
I shall not move.

When the world is made silent
and lovers break the promises
they meant to keep.
When laughter has disappeared
and loves music no longer fills
the air
I shall not speak.

I shall be stone, my heart hardened, my eyes sightless, my mind silenced.

I shall be water, my kiss relieving, my sound serene, my power believed.

I shall be wind, my movement unseen, myself unclean, my hit unbroken, my will unspoken.

I shall be fire, my step destructive, my touch corruptive, my voice choking, my thought provoking.

For I am a beautiful disguise
over self-centered lies.
For this is life in this day and age
and I am people as they are
today.
And all of this will never seem
strange.
For I am human,
I shall not change.
