Bitter Friends

by FTS Miles   Oct 31, 2004

It haunts me,
With its intrusive eyes.
I watch for it,
Attempt to catch its gaze squarely
And wrestle it to flight.
Then I wander in unexpected paths
To cover my trail,
To forget its whispers and
Visions in the pressing silence,
To free myself and explore
Without an echo of my former footfalls.
But it always finds me,
Smiling tears of cause
And softly sobbing
Smiles of effect
As it stands across
The river I cannot ford
(Though I work on it sometimes...)
Yes, we're bitter friends
The Past and I,
Forever together,
Forever apart.
