Dancer in the Night

by Unseen Exposure   Nov 5, 2004

I stand outside in the dusk
To darkness I've become immune
I gracefully awake my slumber
And live by the light of the moon

I dance with the souls of the dead
I sing the carols of the night
I trace the names on gravestones
And sympathize with their plight

Sometimes, as I'm dancing
A soul puts in their feet, and glide
Step by step in motion
Together as one, we stride

But somewhere within the song
A beat changes, and they must go
I only notice when it's too late
And I must dance again solo

I twist my body in shapes so strange
I bend my back, and curl my toes
Twirling in constant motion
To a melody that goes, and goes

I toss back my head and scream
Throw up my hands and cry
I put my whole heart into the movements
And I reach up to touch the sky

I smile at the stars above me
And dance while I begin to wonder
The pace begins to quicken
It booms and cracks like thunder

Lightning strikes light the way
And it's flashes signal my cue
That the finale is coming up
And soon my dance will be through

My heart beat goes astray
I give up all of my cares
I don't care who passes by me
And I don't want to know who stares

Thunder begins to halt
It's off and rolling in the distance
My dance is coming to a close
I'm sensing the resistance

I take my bow and curtsey
Then stumble off the stage
Dawn is quickly coming
It's time he put me back in my cage ...
