THE MAN WITH THE LANTERN

by SWAPNIL SAWANT   Nov 8, 2004

He shuddered at the sight of the cave,
It was dark and scary,
The journey through it was long and tiresome,
Pains to be endured were gruesome,
But the reward at the end of it was one of a kind,
It was desired by all mankind,
There was a man at the entrance of the cave,
had a lantern in his hand,
Darkness feared the light of the lantern,
Fear was the enemy of this man,

The traveler asked for his help,
The man agreed.

The traveler noticed,
“ Seems like you have been hurt many times sir,
Your face and body say it all”
The man said,
“I help people cross the cave.”

The lantern threw light on the traveler's path,
The man stumbled,
But made sure that light shone on the traveler's path,
He fell again and got hurt,
His face was battered with dust,
It made the traveler say,
“ Sometimes God is not just”
Denying it the man got up,
His voice had the enthusiasm of sparrows chirp,
He said,
“This is life”
He shone the path for the stranger,
selflessly he himself fell in the darkness,
The traveler crossed the cave,
While the man dug his own grave,
The traveler said,
“ Sir you are very brave!
And your lantern is very unique,
Sometimes it gets bleak,
And suddenly shines brighter than before!”
At this the man smiled,
And in rhyme the lantern shone brighter,
The traveler's logic,
Many questions fought,
Maybe the lantern will throw light on his thoughts.
