Jimmy's Almost Birthday

Today is Jimmy's birthday
And I've been cordially invited
But for reasons I can't explain
I'm simply not excited

Today should have been different
Jimmy would be turning four
But an accident snapped his neck
And he's not living anymore

He was coming home from school
She waited patiently in her car
Waiting for the bus to arrive
And bring him to her arms

It was September seventh
Nineteen-ninety nine
Jimmy's first day of Kindergarten
As well as his last time

The doors from the bus opened
Kids came pouring out
One by one she waited
And then heard Jimmy shout

"Mommy!" He called from a distance
As he began to cross the street
Her heart stopped when she saw
Jimmy fall off his feet

The car fled the scene of the crime
And Jimmy lay there dead
Mom ran to his side
And gently cradled his head

"Baby please don't leave me
My world will be dark and Grey"
But no matter what she had said
He had already passed away

She laid down by her broken son
And held him tight until paramedics came
"Ma'am do you remember what happened?
We need to know who's to blame"

They put Jimmy on the stretcher
Put him in the car and closed the doors
She watched the scene in horror
"Did it really happen?" She wasn't sure

Today turned into tomorrow
Reality seemed to hit her hard
Receiving multiple "I'm sorry" phone calls
And "Our sympathy" cards

He'd was buried next to his father
Who had passed away just last year
Under the oak tree in her back yard
So she could have them near

God stole the men in her life
One grown, the other trying
She laid flowers on his gravestone
She was broken and felt like dying

But she raised her head high
And wiped away her tears of pain
She was strong and she could prove it
She'd live on in memory of their name

One thing she'd never comprehend
Is why God ripped happiness from her hands
She never had a reason
And she'd never understand

Today is Jimmy's birthday
But today he would be five
If only the car had seen him
Jimmy would still be alive ...
