SQUEAK! The old heavy wooden door sang out in the night, as it scraped the floor. Anastasia Richmond paused. Praying that no one would wake up. After several minutes, when no one came charging down the stairs with a baseball bat, she continued on. She tip toed up the steps, stopping at every cricket song and every noisy step. Finally, she made it into her room. Exhaling a sigh of relief she flicked on the light with a long fore-finger. Ana had to stifle a scream. Her twin brother Carson had been waiting for her to come home. "God, Carson, what are you doing? You trying to give me a heart attack?" She asked panting. "So, where were you?" he asked calmly. completely ignoring her question. Ana flipped her strawberry hair which was in stark contrast with her brother's dark dark almost black-brown hair. "Out," she answered vaguely. "Annie..." he said standing up. His six feet 2 inches towered over Ana's 5 foot 4 inches. "Carson..." she said jokingly. "Zebra, I want a real answer. Do you even realize what would have happened if Lorna and Travis found out that you broke curfew?" Ana shrugged, "Who cares, they did not and you know what they were probably off getting high together." Carson stood up to his full height. "That is still not the point, Zebra." Ana stared at her brother. "If you are going to call me Zebra, then you need to leave. Only Mama and Daddy could get away with calling me that." The twin's green-brown eyes met, each with a different emotion. Ana's held distrust, hurt, and pain...Carson's eyes had simple worry for his sister. He knew that once she got on the subject of their parents, she would break down and shut off. He nodded and just left the room. Annie was right though, no one ever cared about them, who would? They were orphans. |
