With Angels for Eternity

by Unseen Exposure   Nov 17, 2004

"Honey you should eat"

"Dad, leave me alone!"

"You're getting so thin!
There's nothing left but skin and bone."

She ran up to her room
And tightly slammed the door
She laid her fragile body
Slowly down upon her floor

She was weak, and tired
Tears fled out of her eyes
She knew what she was doing
Was making her life compromised

But ever since her mother's death
And her sister was diagnosed with depression
Dancing became her life
And not eating, an obsession

Her father was losing grip
He couldn't bear to lose his "baby girl"
That had been dancing
Ever since she knew how to twirl

He knew about her disease
But didn't know what he should say
And every night he'd go to sleep
Saying "Tomorrow will be the day"

Too many tomorrow's later
Her anorexia got out of hand
She was taken to the hospital
Because she could no longer stand

IV's pumped the missing elements
Back into her thirsty veins
Her dad sat patiently by her side
Wishing he could take away her pain

He prayed to God, "Don't let her go,
I need her here with me
Whatever you want me to do, I will
Just let my broken family be"

He laid down his tired head
And then slowly began to cry
Repeating over and over
"Baby girl, please don't die"

He hid his face inside the covers
And without wanting to, fell asleep
He was soon awakened
By a loud, sustaining beep

Doctors came rushing in
"Excuse me sir, you have to go"

"Nurse, what's going on?!"

"Sir, right now, we just don't know"

A couple minutes later
The doctor walked out, her face kept down
"I'm sorry, we did everything we could
But she's with God in heaven now"

"Baby girl!!" He wailed in pain
"You've left me all alone!!
I cannot make it without you
I won't do it on my own!!"

Days later, at her funeral
He put roses on her casket
Not know if he would ever
Find the strength to get past it

He reached into a bag
And pulled out pink ballet shoes
And he said "Now, my angel
Your dreams will always be with you"

"I just want you to know I'm sorry
For not stepping in
When I noticed you were fading
And becoming way too thin
But please know that I loved you
And you were my only Baby Girl
And I begged God for hours
Not to take you from this world
But he had bigger plans for you
And I know I'll overcome this hurt"
And with that, one last tear
Rolled down his cheek, onto his shirt

He slowly walked away
And he looked back only to see
His little girl's spirit rising
Flying with Angels into eternity ...

^ This poem is based on a book I read that I thoroughly enjoyed and thought would make a beautiful poem. I tried as best I could. Let me know what you think!!
[The book is called "A Dance Between Sisters" by Tracey Porter.]
