Across a Sea of Earth and Time (Summer 1985)

by FTS Miles   Nov 18, 2004

[Yes, another oldie. This time from when I was 14. But I think it explains a good deal about the how's and why's of my philosophy on life... and definitely explains in some respects certain aspects of my poetry.]

Across a sea of Earth and Time
I find my future and past combined
With memories of loves and battles,
Won and lost in moonlit and magical groves
And blood-stained, body-strewn fields.

I see a man....
He lies watching the stars
With a wolfhound and fire
As sole accompaniment.
And the same later, or earlier....
Sitting on stacked-rock fence,
Matching the wind-song with the chords of his harp
With the cresting winds buffeting his crown
Of leather-tethered golden hair.

I see a couple, deep within love's embrace
Inseparable through time
Yet too often apart....
They release their passions
Before the coming storm
Which carries more than foul weather
But spells the end to yet another reunion.

I gaze farther back....
To a latin man seeking destiny,
Hoping to find it in the war of Legions.
In battle he discovers a way of Lives
He will not soon forget.
I come forward....
And sorrow for another pair of lovers
Blinded in their knowledge of love immortal
To the facts of mortality;
Reemphasized them by a beautiful lake
And its unyielding denizens.

These are all me,
Both happy and sad,
Inescapable keys to what I am.
O'er a sea of Earth and Time
I find my last key in one land and race now past.
One day I shall return
And all will again be mine:
My harp, my Love, my destiny, and my hound.
But till then I will live to my fullest
The life I've been granted this time 'round.
