The Letter

by Unseen Exposure   Nov 21, 2004

At the top of the stairwell
In an abandoned town
She ran away from everyone
They all put her down

She peered over the railing
The headboards are weak
As she closed her eyes
A tear slid down her cheek

She imagines the house in color
How it might have been before
Cobwebs have disappeared
And there's no cracks in the floor

Perhaps, there was a ball
And million dollar dresses
And as her mind wanders off
She's relieving all her stresses

In the middle of the room
She imagines a [matredee]?
Playing the piano for the guests
Putting heart into every key

She opens her eyes and smiles
And wipes tears from her face
Glides down the stairwell
And pretends she's caught in his embrace

She's the woman of the hour
All eyes are on her
Mesmerizing everyone in the room
She causes chatter to stir

But soon she realizes
Reality can't be left behind
And she mustn't forget
What it is she's trying to find

She runs back up the stairs
And they creek and crack
She says "Until I find it,
I simply can't go back"

First bedroom on the right
In the drawer by the bed
She pulls out the letter
To find it covered all in red

Running out of the house
Tripping over loose nails
"I'm never going back"
She said between inhales

She pulled into the drive
And threw away the letter
She never should have looked for it
She should have known better
