The farthest mile

by don mohr   Nov 22, 2004

We have gone the distance, and
travelled the last mile;
There we stand, you and I, alone
again, but better off I know, better
off for us;
I try to listen to what they are going
to say, but it gets lost, you know
how that goes, it wasn't for our
ears to fall upon anyway;
The last step is in sight, take it,
too late for fearing anything now,
I will go with you, like always;
Didn't that make it end quickly?
Aren't you still the show, stealing
away what was taken, but this time
we know, and they didn't-forsaken
how did they not?
Let us stand once again, like before
we started walking this direction,
and not remember anything except
where we are now, and leave them
behind;
I hear a summons from the high
clouds, over the tall mountain-
it says to you go, and don't be
afraid, this time you go without
me, and here I must stay, so you
won't be alone, anymore.
