Early Winter's Snow

Early Winter’s Snow

Early winter snows so appealing
Fall’s color still carpets the ground
White blanket now spread all around
Colorful rich earth now concealing.

Fresh and crisp so is the air
Soft steps I now pack in the snow
As down an old path I go
Falling snow making white my hair.

My shovel now clears the drive
Revealing fall’s color still there
Earth’s creatures still in their lair
Rich earth underneath is alive.

Yes earth worms are actively wiggling
Moist earth’s fragrance rising in air
Life going on even there
Facing cold’s challenge still giggling.

I know soon the ground will be barren
And life underneath will recede
Leaving only the seed
Keeping life’s promise there in.

This remains winter’s intrusion
Announcing cold weather to come
A time when north winds will hum
For now a delightful delusion.
