Needs and Desires

by Michael D Nalley   Nov 26, 2004

One day in December I heard a mother I was listening to say
She explained, to her daughter, pickings might be slim, on Christmas day
She said her daughter looked at her, and she calmly replied
Mother we really don’t need anything I am satisfied

For some very strange reason, these simple words of wisdom would not leave my head
After pondering on them for days, they seemed to me the wisest words I ‘d ever heard said
It occurred to me the whole world could learn a lot from this girl who’s only ten
Especially in this world so full of desires, where nobody wins, except now and then

I thought about so many problems that could be solved if everyone was satisfied
If people loved each other, and did not feel like they had to take anyone for a ride
I don’t believe this little girl would deprive her mother of the joy of giving
Even though she might have understood the real difficulty of making a living

But still I think she must know Him. Yes I am talking about the One we celebrate the birth of on Christmas day
The One most people have completely forgotten about, and why we really celebrate anyway
And many of the ones who have not forgotten, have distorted his teachings to fit their own desires
I think that most of the preachers that sell Him on the TV are nothing more than liars

But anyway I want to tell the mother of this child she is right to be impressed
I mean, with her child’s unselfishness and wisdom, she is truly blessed

I believe there is something profoundly beautiful
In the way sometimes, God utters the truth through the mouth of a child
I believe this is something profoundly wonderful
Like the beauty, of the songs, of birds, singing His praises, in the wild
I really must confess the child’s words were not the beauty I was seeking when I heard them from her mother
I was really just trying to satisfy the desires of my eyes, and I guess I really got the other

So much to learn i our time of 'want to obtain all' and a money-talks syndrome. Great poem at the right time for the right purpose.

Another beautiful and wonderful job...it is so many times that God speaks to us through younger children, at times they truly make us understand what is a blessing.

    God Bless
