Reaper of My Heart

by Michael D Nalley   Nov 27, 2004

Oh reaper of my heart I don't know where to start.
To write about something I don't even understand.
I think it all began when I touched your lovely hand.
As you stood on the chair to increase your height,.
Could we know that someone would fall that night?
You did not fall, but I did. I've kept my love hid
Oh reaper of my heart, what would you have me do?
Live in a lie, and pretend I do not love you?
I can do that you know, and maybe it would be best.
People are jealous of you, you may have guessed.
I'm sorry if I remain silent when those silly people run you down.
I don't like to waste my words on those who want to act like a clown.
If my words don't say what I really mean, pray I'm understood.
Please understand this, I mean you no harm, only what is good.
Oh reaper of my lonely heart, is my heart as cold as ice,
That I would put a cage of gold around a bird of paradise
But if you would enter into a cage of gold, this is my advice.
Enter into my cage of gold, and I will make it very nice.
Oh reaper of my heart, I was captured from the start
Do you think it is your dimensions?
That has captured my good intentions?
Are you frightened by my interventions?
Here's something else that I'd like to mention.
Can you understand my frustration?
I see you searching for gratification?
That I'd gladly give you if its consolation,
If I were your dream's personification.

I don't want you to think that I think that anyone can direct the course of love.
I am already wounded, by my own understanding of the force of love.
Wounded gratefully, I bleed willing and joyfully with help from above.
I know if love speaks, you must listen with the understanding I am speaking of
Listen, even though its voice may shatter my dreams.
As the north wind lays waste to the garden it seems
I am talking about ecstasy, of course.
It is really such a powerful force.
It is causing a physical transformation and changing my state.
That is why I wanted to thank you before it is too late.

By now you probably think this poem is too long,
I'm just letting my feelings sing a freedom song.
I want to capture your beauty with words.
But I cannot capture angels with birds?
I love the cute way you look first to the left and then to the right.
One glance and you overtook, when the smile on your face got tight.
How your hair shimmers in the light. You are definitely out of sight.

Oh reaper of my heart, would you please think about this for a while.
He was sold, for thirty pieces of silver, by a man who once had a smile,.
But Jesus set Himself up for a fall, When he told Judas to go heed his call.
Judas once loved Christ but latter was not kind
Jesus said, love the Father with our whole mind,
Whole heart, whole soul, and whole strength.
Not to change the Law of Moses, only its length
If we are to love our God with our whole heart,
How much heart do we have left to love our neighbor?
A whole can't be divided or torn apart
I have thought long about this and my mind did labor,
Then from a mystic poet who was a master of his art.
I read, the good in us was fragments of God's own heart.
I will tell you now what I want for Christmas with no further stalling,
I want to hold your lovely hand once more to keep you from falling.
