You Smiled at Me

by T   Dec 2, 2004

I remember when I first saw you,
Running down that beach,
you turned and looked and smiled at me,
To my heart you reached.

For many years I loved you,
Dreaming of your face,
All I wanted was to have you,
You were my happy place.

You couldn't see beyond the friend,
When we spoke for hours,
I absorbed your every breath,
Your laugh could have moved towers.

Then that day finally came,
You said "kid I love you so",
You held my hand and kissed me,
And swore never to let me go.

From that day on my life was full,
You were mine and all was good,
We were so happy and complete,
You knew me and understood.

"take a look at me now is how it went",
I still hear the song in my head,
You whispered to me as we danced,
Next time I saw you, you were dead.

I should have been there on that day,
I got the news and I didn't believe,
That you sat on your bike, the one you loved,
God called you and what you did was leave.

I saw your body bashed and broken,
For many hours I just cried and cried,
God damn that truck, look what it has taken,
I knew, I felt I had died inside.

No one could have imagined my hurt,
I never felt so weary, alone
My soul was shattered, my heart was burst,
I stared at the walls of my empty home.

I kept asking why did you go?
Since your not around, since you've gone,
I'm so empty and so low,
I never had days oh so long!

Now I see you flying on the wings of a dove,
Trying to stay but flying away,
You took with you all, my love
You took it that day, the day you strayed.

I remember when I first saw you,
Running down that beach,
You turned and looked and smiled at me,
To my heart you reached.

Dedicated to my babes, Pat....
