Expressionless Mirrors

by Sarah   Dec 4, 2004

As I sit here, gazing up at the moon
Beneath the blanket of twinkling stars,
Certain I'll never see you again,
Doubtful of the future and what it holds,
Ever more frightened of the coming Dawn,
Forgetting the good times
Gladly remembering the bad,
Hands folded carefully in my lap,
I remember your smile.
Jubilant and perfect.
Kisses as soft as summer rain
Lightly sprinkled across my face.
Morning saw you out the door,
Never have I seen such a look
On that expressive face of yours.
'Perhaps,' you said, 'it is time to stop all this.
Quit fooling each other.
Really... It just isn't there anymore.'
Silly me.
Thinking that love and pain were completely different things.
Under the light of this full moon
Very slowly I make a promise.
Whatever it takes, I will not let you see me suffer.
Yet inside I am broken.
A mirror shattered beyond repair.

P.S.: I usually wait for seven poems I enjoy greatly from a poet before I make them a favorite. (We all have our little guidelines and rules.) But you're definitely a new favorite. I've definitely enjoyed these four selections of yours and look forward to reading more. Keep 'em coming!

Beautiful in its own mournful manner. Sorry you had that experience, but I suppose love and lovelost both make us substantially more than we were.
