Without Meaning To

He stood back
Gazing loningly at me
I could see in his eyes
Exactly what he wanted us to be.

"I'm so sorry," I said.
"But you know I have a boyfriend."
He pleaded with me
To bring my current relationship to an end.

I shook my head, and said,
"That's something I can't do.
I can't break his heart.
You know that's true."

"So you're going to break mine instead?"
I couldn't look him in the eye
I was feeling torn both ways
But I didn't know why.

"I can't watch you with him anymore."
He said to me
"I know he loves you, but so do I -
Why can't you see?"

I argued that my relationship was perfect
Why did he want to mess it up?
I didn't want to fight about this anymore
So I told him I'd had enough.

He touched my face
With his left hand
And asked me desperately
To please try and understand.

I couldn't look at him
So I studied the ground
We stood there for a minute
Neither of us making a sound.

He put a finger under my chin
And raised my head to look him in the eye
He looked at me for a moment
His face outlined against the starry sky.

Before I knew what had happened
He leaned down and kissed my cheek
Before moving to my mouth
I could feel my knees going weak.

I didn't know what was happening to me
I loved my boyfriend
But the longer we kissed
The less I wanted it to end.

"I'm sorry... I shouldn't have-"
He muttered nervously when I pulled away
I shook my head and put a finger to his lips
He seemed to know exactly what I wanted to say.

"OK," he said. "I'll wait."
"Thanks..." I replied
But that's when I realized
That this wasn't something I could hide.

As he turned to get into his truck
I felt like someone was watching me
And there my boyfriend stood
He said, "I don't know why I didn't see."

"It's not what you think..."
I began to explain
But when he looked at me
His eyes reflected his pain.

I knew I had to make things right
But I just didn't know what to do
I'd hurt the one I loved
Without meaning to.
