In the times I had nothing,
and thought all was lost.
You were my best friend,
no matter [what] the cost

Personally, I think by adding what into the final line, it makes the flow slightly better, but it's your poem.

A beautiful tribute to your friend. It has been friends who have lifted me when I was giving up. I have met so many Angels here on P&Q...I was at my lowest point when I joined this site....now I look forward to waking each day....I am so glad you have someone like this in your life. Great job on your poem.
