The Great War

by jenni   Jan 7, 2005

The smell of rotten flesh
The sight of shed blood
The feel of mild atmosphere
The taste of skin dried mud.

A body writhing on the ground
Your once friend, A dying man
You remember when it all was good,
Before the war began.

When everyone lived in peace
No pain for family and friends
Now we're hoping and waiting
For all of it to end.

I wrote a letter home today
To tell my mother I'm still here
So many died in battle yesterday
That I had to reassure her fears.

I shouldn't be here doing this
Uderage at only fourteen
But for my country I will fight
To defend and attack for my queen.

I wonder what it's like at home
Is everything okay
Until the world is back to norm
On this war ground I will stay.

I will continue to survive each battle
Will continue to help those in need
I know I can be a hero
I know my country can succeed.

So as I gaze around me
And stare at the bloody bodies upon the floor
I'll remember my friends who didn't make it
Those who were killed in The Great War.
