Last Phone Call

by Danielle   Jan 9, 2005

The ringing of the phone still echoes in my head -- four rings and I heard you were gone
My laughter filled the air and their silence told me the truth, no longer would I hear you calling to me

You held on, waiting to hold him close, to whisper an unspoken promise of love, they said
He didn't understand, to young to know you were leaving -- flying away to join the man you loved

You cried, they said one last gasp and you slipped away -- his ring pressed tightly in your hand; his small hand falling away, never knowing you wouldn't wake again

I whispered how -- car crash, they said
Your long awaited honeymoon, postponed until now. . .forever you'll be away. . .

I closed my eyes, begging the night to give you back
For the silence to echo the sound of your voice and the ringing in my head to end

Please come home, they said, he needs you -- so young, not quite past one. . .he barely knew them. . .your all he's got now.

Alone. . .he and I

The ringing of the phone still echoes in my head -- four rings and three hearts torn apart.

One last phone call and I heard you were gone.
