Dear Student Body

by Jacklyn   Jan 11, 2005

5th hour just started,
It was a regular kind of day,
She sat at a table,
With the class clown,
Who always had something to say,
With the A student,
Who never failed below a B.

She never talked or said a thing,
Never smiled, showing nothing upon her face,
She was ignored, lost in the talk,
Her eyes were so dull,
So lonely she was.

Tried to get her work done,
But still averaged a C+,
This was her life Monday through Friday.

She was absent December 4th,
Barely did she miss a single day of school,
Still thought nothing of it until they said it over the P.A.,

“Dear Student Body,
This is a time for the class president to speak,
Clare Smith was not here today,
Most of you probably did not realize,
If you even know who she is,
But I thought you should know,
Yesterday she committed suicide.

She’s in my 3rd hour of history,
I only wish I talked to her,
But instead I left her alone,
There are a lot of things we should all regretted,
Not helping her should be number one.

Lets take a few moments to let this sink in,”
The room was totally silent,
All smiles left our faces,
Not even our teachers could keep our mouths this shut,
Never has so many students been so still,
Never has a school been so silent,
“Once I know more, further announcements will be heard,
Goodbye Student Body,
Goodbye Clare Smith,
Signing off is your one and only class president.”

The class clown made no jokes,
Did not even make a noise,
The A student sat still,
Stared at the corner Clare use to fill,
The teachers were all quiet,
After 6th hour everyone boarded their buses,
The world kept on spinning,
One girl killed herself,
Which made five hundred and two mistakes,
Spread through the student body,
Cause no one talked to this lonely face.

I still look in that corner,
Where there is now just an empty chair,
It’s been three whole months,
So many went to her funeral,
Most of us feel guilty,
Five hundred and two mistakes that were the same,
This whole Student Body,
Never talked to Clare Smith.

~hey this poem means a lot to me and everyone that goes to my school because recently in the first semester we have lost 5 class mates to different car acidents~

Woah, kind of makes you realise it's not okay to just ignore someone. And what drastic measure some go to. I can relate in someways. Very well written. Nice work girl.
