The war graves

by happy days   Jan 12, 2005

The silence we felt
As we looked a the graves
The tears that we cried
As we looked at their age

Their life they had given
To help free our people
The courage they showed
When friends they were dying

The peace was comforting
The place overwhelming
So many are dead
As a result of our war

The grass is so green
The stones are so white
A place of remembrance
For us to respect

The poppies stand proud
The memorial for all
The rows upon rows
Of those creamy white stones

Each one had a name
A family, a home
Many were young
Others were old

We hugged and we cried
As we stood and stared
Proud to be British yet
Ashamed to be man

*i went to Belgium this year with air cadets to complete a European march which was in memory of those who gave their life in the war and we visited some war graves which is where i got the idea for this poem from*
