I walked as if in a dream. slowly slipping towards the sea. I saw my face in the water- yet my eyes did not see me. My eyes saw instead a mask, some mad clown's masquerade. The false guise of a fool, who for a fool's been played. In a flash of pain I awoke Looking around I saw the sea. On the sand I saw a dead man, A bullet had set him free. I walked lightly over to him- no footprints did I make- I looked down at his empty eyes, "Lord giveth and he take" All at once a madness took me, staring at a face I'd known, a face gentle and heartbroken, a face that was my own...
