Candle

by Stacey Martin   Jan 16, 2005

A candle shines through fabric
Flickering, wavering
Soon it Will catch fire
And the world will see its light

I am a shadow, no one can see me
I hid myself from all your thoughts
When you think about me, what do you see?
A glimpse of fire behind a veil

I won't burn the barrier yet
I'll wait just a little longer
The soft, cool satin hides my destruction
I lie in wait under pretense of hope

I crouch down and shield myself from you
You don't want to hear what I have to say
Whenever I speak I scorch your ears and my own tongue
Whenever you see my face your eyes are cold

I'll keep my dagger sheathed for you
I'll keep my mouth shut and my eyes down
Soon enough you'll all be cinders
No one comes close to an open flame

You would leave if you saw my face
You would bleed if I opened my mouth
You shrink from me now, and I watch you through my veil
You know what lurks under the surface

For you I'll close my eyes
So you won't burn yourself on my soul
But even though I wrap myself up in satin
You won't come near me

For you I'll hide my darkest violence
To protect yourself from who I am
I won't let the demon out of its prison
And I'm so afraid you can see it anyway

Every time you touch me you bleed
Every time you give me your life I break it
I crush you underneath my weight
With every look I give you, you burn

A candle shines through fabric
Flickering, Wavering
Soon I will consume you all
Don't touch me

No one comes close to an open flame
