Chapter 2: Behind Blue Eyes

“You must be having a really bad day.”
I blinked. “Um, yeah. Sorry um, how do you know my name?”
He smiled and gave a slight chuckle. “I’m Patrick Sheldon. You’re in my German class. And also in my English class. Which actually started- ” he glanced at the clock on the wall. “- twenty minutes ago.”

I stared at him. Patrick Sheldon. I remembered seeing him on the very first English class I had. A very good looking guy that I had automatically dismissed as another one of those self-centered jerks that treated girls like worthless possessions.

“Stacey. Hello? Are you sure you’re all right?” he asked, interrupting my thoughts. I shuffled my feet uncomfortably. “Uh, no actually. I’m having a really, REALLY bad day. I was in a rush to get to school and I could not find my jacket and I locked myself out of my house, because I forgot my keys and now,” I sniffed pathetically. “I can’t get to my three dollars because it’s in there.” I pointed at my locker. Patrick shook his head sympathetically as he reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet.
“Here’s three dollars. You can pay Mr. Partridge in English don’t worry about it. I don’t even understand WHY we have to pay to wear our own clothes anyway.”

I was so grateful; I didn’t know what to say. “Hey, thanks. You have no idea what this means to me. I swear I’ll pay you double tomorrow.”
He shrugged and said, “Hey, no big deal. You don’t have to.”
“No, no.” I protested. “I have to pay you back…and I will.”

As we entered the English room, Mr. Partridge put his nasty face on. I could see he was getting ready to humiliate me in front everyone by saying how I wasted his time by missing out on thirty minutes worth of learning. I guess Patrick also saw the storm brewing inside of Mr. Partridge and quickly made up a story that I nodded along to.

I have no idea what Patrick said to make Mr. Partridge smile and thank me. To be perfectly honest, I barely noticed it. I was too distracted by a strange feeling in my stomach. I had not felt like that in a long time but I knew exactly what it was. My heart was pounding like crazy; my stomach was doing flip-flops just hearing him speak.

But no, I could not go through that again. Crushes turned into dating and dating turned into falling. And falling, for me, meant falling…in love.

I could not let that happen to me again.
