Bridge of lies

by Daniel J   Jan 22, 2005

You take me down the street,
Smiling at who we meet,
Who promptly smile in return.

Everyone is friendly,
No-one fights,
Everything is shiny and bright.

The sun is shining everyday,
Plenty to do on a rare rainy day,
Everything is always, always o.k.

The buildings stand tall,
Glistening in the sun,
Everyone is happy and none are poor.

It is you who takes me to this world,
This happy place where dreams come true,
Where time is not too fast and not too slow.

Everyday we walk this path,
The tall trees line the street,
The grass is green under out feet.

The cars are good,
They do not pollute,
The air is always clear.

People can have
Whatever they wish,
No one sheds a tear.

We continue on our way,
I ask a question,
we take another road.
This path is unfamiliar,
but no less bright
than all the ones before.
I ask again,
and our direction changes,
and still the sun shines.

But upon my third question,
we move towards a darker street,
one whose gravel was unfamiliar under my feet,
the jagged edges of the road,
cut me deep, it cut me deep.

The sun stopped shining.
confusion became the rule the street was dark and the air no longer clear as a distant fog enclosed us I could no longer
see the way and the evergreen trees which had once stood proudly were bent and gaunt the green grass all but
parched "what is this place" I asked in wonderment but you would not answer you would not say I knew something was wrong and began to feel uncomfortable as panic set in and my questions remained unanswered rain started falling a storm was brewing thunder stuck and lightning came upon this unfamiliar terrain I ran forwards without seeing without knowing what as before me I ran on to the bridge which had a signpost just visible through the mist and the rain and the dark and the fog and it was off the bridge of lies that I stepped onto nothingness.

brief explanation: This poem is another of my experiments. It's about a person who is being led through a surreal world, a world which is "larger than life" where everyone is happy and everything is ideal. Then the person who is relating the story, begins to ask "questions" - though the reader is not aware what these questions are, the answer has an effect on the road which they travel through this world. The last question receives no answer, everything turns dark and grey, and the real landscape is revealed. "The sun shines no more" - from there onwards, there is no punctuation, "confusion reigns" - everything in that last stanza can be read more than one way, and the new lines are positioned in such a way as to help make that possible. Everything is one flow. In the poem itself, the reader becomes aware of this dark world leading to the "bridge of lies" - the previous sunny world was a farce, there was no point, no truth, only lies which made everything "always, always alright." The poem ends with the tour guide gone, and the persona running blindly into the fog, and off the bridge into nothingness.
