Sad little brown eyes

by Sarah Hotard   Jan 28, 2005

She was 6 years old
when these feelings started to show
she was angry at herself
she sat around and moped
no one to play with
to build with little blocks
at daycare she would sit
and the kids they would mock
her sad little brown eyes
only cried one tear
and just that tear was enough
to make everything clear

She was 10 years old
when school became hell
her friends got into things
she swore she'd never tell
her secrets kept her captive
all her lies were never seen
they wouldn't believe she was dying inside
she always seemed to gleam
Inside her room
she would write
of love and fairy tales
she would dream for hours on end
for someone to just hold her hand
As she went to sleep
and prayed for happiness and no fear
her sad little brown eyes
only cried one tear
and just that tear was enough
to make everything clear

She's 14 now
she waited patiently
all those years of unhappiness
have soon been redeemed
she's in love with a boy now
and she loves school
her friends have stuck beside her
and everything is cool
But still at night
she cries
a hole inside her has not been filled
what is it she will not know
until she feels no more guilt
For she knows her smile is fake and it is a disguise
her sad little brown eyes
only cried one tear
and strolling down her face
was a wet story of all her years
tired of fighting herself
she slipped the covers over her head
and sunk into her bed
Taking the knife in hand
she put it to her skin
remembering the promise
the promise she made to him
she threw the knife aside
and bit her lip
to keep her lips from quivering
she wanted it to be over so quick
No blood was shed that night
just a single tear
and only is it contemporary
she realized nothing was ever clear
when my sad little brown eyes
only cry one tear
