Cardboard King

by nikki @~~   Jan 28, 2005

I walked along a city sidewalk
I walked along an empty street
I was searching for answers to questions that haunt me
but I didn’t even glance at the people I chanced to meet

I watched the lights in a rain drenched mirror
I watched the neon bring the pavement to life
I walked amongst the shadow haunters, and the ghosts of our making
the shadows of the night

I heard the sirens in the distance
I heard the screams, the shouts, the cries
I listened to the bargains, and the dealings
I paid attention to every sugar coated lie

I crept amongst the broken buildings
I crept amongst the broken men
I walked the road of cardboard castles
and cardboard kings without an end

I smelled the over sweet perfume of a cheapened city
I saw the underside of an underworld
I found the secrets that unlock pandora’s box
I chanced upon a black pearl

And I lost my soul there on the city sidewalks
amongst the cardboard kings, and the queens of cheap perfume
and I walked into the first motel I saw,
and I asked that cardboard king for a room.
