Broken Promise (short story)

by Gem   Feb 9, 2005

I had to write this for school but its based on my friendship with some one.

You promised. You said that you wouldn’t leave me, if I didn’t leave you. But you lied. You lied to me. They knocked on my door at 2 o’clock this morning, to tell me that they found you late in the night, lost in an endless sleep. Your lips held a cold blue smile, they said, pleased by your release.

The sun is shining today, but it should be a dark, cold day. I want the world to know that I lost you in the darkness of the night. Everyone is smiling contentedly, but they should all be crying, they should all be hurting inside. Why don’t they know what the world lost last night?

We used to sit on this cliff top when we were sad. You would hug me and wipe the tears from my cheeks with your sleeve, but today, the tears fall to the ground. I needed you to take care of me, to keep me safe. But whilst you were protecting me, you weren’t protecting yourself.

I knelt down in the sandy grass and prayed like we did when we were small. I asked God for freedom from the pain inside my heart. I explained that what happened to you was my fault so any punishment for suicide should be put on my soul.

It was getting darker and the sun was sitting gently on the water’s surface. Birds were flying over the lowered sun, just like the cow that jumped over the moon in the nursery rhyme you are told as a child, where everything has a happy ending.

I stood above the world consumed by a hopeless silence that a scream would not break. The clouds danced around my feet pulling me closer to the edge of life.

In one step forward, all the pain would be gone and I could join you again. One step back and the empty suffering, that my life had so quickly become, would trap me forever.
