If i could see the future

by nikki @~~   Feb 12, 2005

If I had known beforehand
all the things you'd do
I never would have offered
my fragile heart to you.

If I could've seen the future
and all the times you'd make me cry,
I would've chose a different path
I'd rather miss out than live your lie.

If I had 'the sight,'
I'd have seen right through your smile,
and I would've foregone the heartbreak
and saved my tears for something worthwhile.

But they say you cannot change the past,
if I could though, I'd change plenty,
I know everything now that I needed before,
but hindsight's always twenty/ twenty.

I would've known that your forever
was really only until you tired,
and found someone new,
who in you inspired -

all you'd promised to me,
all you swore you meant was true -
like 'you're all I want', 'all I need'
'together forever' and 'I love you.'

I would've seen past your dismissals
'we're just friends' and 'nothing happened.'
I would've known that this was one thing
sorry couldn't ever mend.

And if I could've seen the future
I would've never gone with you behind the ski rack,
I would've never let you kiss me
I would've never kissed you back.

If through my eyes the world was clear
and all the rules laid down low
I would've understood that these things happen,
this is just the way things go.

I would've left all my illusions
outside your bedroom door
and I wouldn't have held on for forever
or even for tomorrow, anymore.

I would've left all my childish dreams behind
and my fantasies in the dark corners of my mind
and I wouldn't have kept anything close to remind me
of you.

If I could've seen the way things would end
I'd have known it would never last
Oh that I could see the future
so that I could change the past.
