Letting Go

by Kari Nichols   Mar 3, 2005

As we sit in pure silence,
And we breathe in cold air
The night gets darker.
We continue to stare.

You speak a few words,
I'll never forget,
"Please let me go.
This you will not regret."

I tell you you can't leave,
And I am unprepared.
I see that you're listening,
And know you can't be repaired.

I don't want to let you go
Though I let you disend.
And in a mix of tears I know
I'll see you once again.

I forgive myself for crying
Because I know it's not what you want.
But I can't help but feel that way,
I'm going to miss you allot.

There are no More "hello"s,
Or "How was your day?"
So I remind myself of the good times
As we set you in your grave.

I leave the site,
It's quiet,
And I sit at home,
It chills.

The rooms have a feel upon them.
The air is dense.
The air is still.

I sit in your spot for days,
Trying to pick up your scent.
Then I figure it's no use.
Pictures are all I have left.

I sort through each one with interest,
Naming where and when each was taken.
I fill a book with every one of you.
My hands continue shaking.

I want to turn around and hug you,
But all I'll be hugging is air.
Down fall a few more tears
As I put the book away with care.

So when I want to remember,
And I want to see your face.
I take out my book,
And I'm set in a happy place.

Until I am done grieving
This is all I have,
And once I leave this Earth
I'll be visiting your land.
