The Burning of Nyarubuye

by Sean Allen   Mar 4, 2005

We sat up on the hill.
Fingers intricately entwined,
darkness traced the lines
running down your face.

A sweet stench filled the air
and a mystic ring of dogs
and beasts kept their distance
from the fierce glow.
Though some of their feast
would scatter with the morning wind
there would be plenty--
enough for all.

We sat up on the hill
and watched the village burn.
Voluptuous plumes of smoke
seductively drifted up--
up into what would prove
to be a very red sunrise.

This kinda reminded me of when I was at school ..For some weird reason. I dunno.

I liked the 'We sat up on the hill' bit. I thought it was pretty cool! But it still reminds me of school? Anywho, I thought it was pretty good actually. woo! 5/5

I really liked this. It portrayed an odd beauty found in a violent disaster portrayed by terrible imageries displayed as lovely romantic notes. I especially admired the last lines,
"We sat up on the hill
    and watched the village burn.
    Voluptuous plumes of smoke
    seductively drifted up--
    up into what would prove
to be a very red sunrise."
i also like how you used transitioning symbols like, "the sweet stench" to add to your effect of glorifying a terrible tragedy. Well done

The massacre at Nyarubuye was terrible... this is an intriguing ode, to say the least. But I suppose quite palatable in comparison to the brutality of the events.

    Nope.

The visuals were nice. Story was, well... dark i guess, and u posting it in this section confirms that. Well, The village it takes place is some place in Africa correct? So i can definetly see why yo chose the colors you did. As for a deeper meaning to it, heh, we all have our own interpretations dont we Sean?

Wow, very interesting. I found the last stanza to be quite powerful and well done. The rest is good too though. Very well detailed and everything. I think this has become one of my favorites.
