Three

by Carlee Ann   Mar 13, 2005

A little girl, just three years old
Sits on the living room floor
She wonders why today is worse
Why daddy beats mommy more

She can't help but see
All the beatings and the pain
Each hit against her Momma's face
The hand beats again and again.

Her daddy slurs his words,
Yelling and pushing her hard
The little girl can't understand
Why God has dealt her this card

Her momma tries to hide her
To prevent her from living their life
But there isn't a place to go
The little girl lives in their strife

Her daddy never hits her,
Just yells that she's done wrong
And then he beats her mommy
She drowns him out with a little song

"Hush little baby,
Don't say a word
Papa's gonna buy you a
Mockingbird"

But her little voice
And her hands over her ears
Don't drown out the screams,
The blood and the tears.

Then daddy finishes,
And stumbles to his room
She runs over to mommy
Under the bloodless moon.

The little girl goes through so much,
And she is only three
And the hardest thing to face?
That little girl was me.
