When She Drinks

by Kaitlin Kristina   Mar 18, 2005

You watch her,
Through the crowded bar,
She is your target,
Lets see how far…

She sits alone,
Turning guys down,
But her eyes are solemn,
Often turned to the ground.

You approach,
Smile; ask to buy her a drink,
And as she accepts,
She’s bagged, you think.

She pulls out a cigarette,
You light it; you’re feeling good,
You think you have a chance,
With most girls,
You probably would.

You touch her shoulder,
She softly smiles,
You can sense her pain,
Emanates for miles.

So let me tell you about her-
All about her broken heart.
She smokes when she drinks,
Her world is torn apart,
She only drinks,
When she is alone,
And alone she will be,
When, tonight, she goes home.

So when you light that cigarette,
You ask her to dance, she turns you down,
She gratefully accepts the drink,
She’s not out to mess around,
Don’t remind her of how boys,
Often play with young girls hearts,
Try to bed them down,
Swarm around the prey like sharks.

You wont be going home tonight,
Not with her,
The pretty sight.
This is that kind of place,
But she isn’t that kind of girl,
She smokes when she drinks,
Her anger unfurls,

She’s been there, done that,
And she doesn’t come here for the chase,
She comes here for the drinks,
To you, just another pretty face.

Don’t take it too hard,
Don’t get let down and pout,
For a complicated girl,
She’s not that hard to figure out.

Just leave her alone,
You don’t want to be the next to let her down,
She’s been broken enough before,
Don’t deal her another round.

Just buy her the drink,
Cut your losses,
Walk away,
You know she’ll get attached;

And you know that you won’t stay.

Inspired by a song, I could not get it out of my head, a couple lines are from the song as well. I think the song title is the same as the poem title. Let me know what you think. Thank you :)

Great poem, Kaitlin! It admittedly sounds like it should be a song because it has a wonderful, rhythmic flow. But the message and how it's delivered is the point of mastery. Subtly emotive... sneaks up on you and makes you smile softly, sadly at the poignancy of the final lines.

Thank you so much Sunny, for the kind words but also for citing the song, the title and singer was evading me.
