Hey, Mel, what's up? I haven't seen you in a couple years Tell me how you are; tell me all your dreams and all your fears We used to be best friends; then suddenly it changed We went different ways, and our lives rearranged We stopped talking, and I've only seen you once since then And you told people mean rumors about me, that's how long it's been I've heard the rumors, but not the ones about me, they're about you And I pray and hope to God that they are not true I've heard that you became so different, and now you're sneaking out You don't really care about God, and you think boys are what it's all about I've heard that your mom locks you in your room at night But somehow you leave your house, and are sometimes gone until light I've heard that you've had a lot of sex, and that you've been sleeping around It seems like you don't care, and that you have no grounds One rumor said you were pregnant, another that you were on birth control It seems like you need a friend - one to understand and console Do you remember what it used to be like, back at our old school? We were good kids, and most of the time we obeyed the rules One time we got in trouble and couldn't talk to each other for a week That was really hard, but finally our teacher let us speak We used to have sleepovers and trade each other's toys We used to play capture the flag and talk about the boys We knew it would always be okay Because we had each other every day That was before we grew old enough to have real problems It's so hard as each new one comes Now it's so different, but I'd still like to help you To show you what's right, and keep you from feeling blue I want to help you get closer to God, the Father And help your life feel like something other than a bother I want you to feel the things that are really important in life Instead of only feeling the hardship, pain, and strife Melanie, I'm sorry that things had to turn out like this for you Just please let me be there; don't let your life be through
